According to news reports, this is the fifth time in the last twelve months that a T-38 training aircraft has crashed.
November 14, 2018 – 7:40 pm: Twenty-eight-year-old Captain John F. Graziano, USAF, died in a training accident involving a T-38 Talon aircraft at Laughlin Air Force Base on Wednesday evening.
According to an announcement posted late Wednesday night on the Laughlin Air Force Base Facebook page, Graziano’s co-pilot, Captain Mark S. Palyok, was also injured in the crash. His condition has not been made public at this time, although we are told that he has been released from the hospital.
Both pilots were instructors with the 87th Flying Training Squadron, stationed at Laughlin.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated. However, news reports note that this is the fifth crash involving a T-38 aircraft in the last twelve months – which accounts for half of the crashes the entire Air Force has suffered in the last year.
The Air Force has not commented on these facts. Boeing is currently developing a new training aircraft to replace the T-38, but it will not be deployed for several years.
The cause of this particular crash is still under investigation.
