PLEASE NOTE: TERRY BRYANT IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING NEW YAZ CASES.
Drospirenone is the principle ingredient in the drug YAZ. YAZ is an oral birth control pill manufactured by Bayer. Marketed as a fourth-generation birth control pill, it was presented by Bayer as a safe drug that could also be used to treat acne and headaches. However, several studies have shown that this form of birth control is not as safe as Bayer initially claimed, nor is it approved for use in people with acne and headaches. As a result, many women have filed claims against Bayer, seeking legal representation from experienced personal injury lawyers, asserting that the company both understated the risks and overstated the benefits of the pill.
What is Drospirenone?
Drospirenone is a synthetic hormone that closely mimics the function of progesterone. When present in certain concentrations, drospirenone can alter the body’s chemistry, preventing ovaries from releasing eggs. It also modifies the uterine lining, making it more difficult for a fertilized egg to bond and develop. To be effective, drospirenone must be taken daily.
How is drospirenone dangerous, and why is it prompting women to join a YAZ class action lawsuit?
According to several studies, including a comprehensive nested case-control study produced by the British Medical Journal in 2011, women on drospirenone have a greater chance of developing thromboembolisms. One study produced by a Scandinavian gynecology journal found a 600 percent greater risk of thromboembolic events for women taking drospirenone. This is much greater than other fourth-generation birth control pills and comparable to third-generation birth control products. However, because the pill is marketed as a fourth-generation birth control, consulting with a birth injury lawyer is essential for those who believe they have been affected by these risks. This negligence by Bayer is a major reason why many women have chosen to file claims against the company.
What is thrombosis? Can it be fatal?
Thrombosis is a general term that refers to a blood clot. Women taking drospirenone are most likely to suffer from a venous thrombotic event, which is when a blood clot in a vein obstructs the flow of blood. This can quickly result in major tissue death if it is not addressed, and it can be fatal. In nearly all cases, hospital intervention is required to prevent permanent or fatal tissue death or organ failure.
What should I do before deciding to join a YAZ class action lawsuit?
Any women who have taken drospirenone and suffered serious adverse effects as a result should consider speaking to an attorney. While thousands of women have already filed claims against Bayer, it is still possible to pursue damages against the company. An experienced drug injury attorney may be able to help a victim determine their legal options and pursue a settlement on their behalf.
