A workout supplement may contain dangers that can result in serious medical complications or death. The primary ingredient in many of these drugs is DMAA, also known as dimethylamylamine or methylhexanamine. DMAA is believed to have caused the death of two U.S. Army soldiers after they took the substance and suffered from heart attacks. The ingredient is a strong stimulant marketed for its ability to increase stamina, metabolism and focus. However, five deaths have been connected to the drug and many more serious complications have been reported. DMAA is also believed to be the likely cause of death of Claire Squires, a marathon runner who collapsed at the finish line of the 2012 London Marathon. In most cases, DMAA-infused workout supplement side effects are similar to the effects of amphetamines. If you or a loved one have experienced adverse effects from such supplements, it’s crucial to consult with a work injury lawyer to understand your legal options.

Methylhexanamine is often marketed as a dietary or exercise aid, but in April, the FDA has made this illegal. The FDA investigated workout supplement dangers and found them to be too deadly for consumer use. At the time of the announcement, the administration had 86 reports of people who have suffered from workout supplement side effects. This number, however, is derived from voluntary reporting, so there are likely many more people who have been affected. Their investigation turned up nervous system disorders, severe heart problems and psychiatric complications.

This decision has far-reaching impact, because nearly 50 percent of people in the U.S. took a dietary aid from 2003 to 2006 (according to a 2011 study). Unfortunately, these products are not reviewed by the FDA before they are put on the market. Once they are available to consumers, it is up to the administration to investigate their risks. As a result, many substances that are marketed as fat-burning or performance-enhancing contain DMAA. It is likely that many people have recently used a workout supplement with DMAA-related dangers. These products include Jack3d, OxyElite Pro, iSatori PWR, Nutrex Hemo-Rage Black, Nutrex Lipo 6 Black, MuscleTech HydroxyStim, MuscleTech NeuroCore, Fahrenheit Nutrition Lean EFX, Muscle Warfare Napalm, SNI Nitric Blast, BIORhythm SSIN Juice, SEI MethylHex 4.2, MuscleMeds Code Red and Gaspari Nurtrition Spirodex. The FDA believes there are more dietary aids containing DMAA that have not yet been identified.

Workout supplement side effects are often worse after consuming caffeine or alcohol. This is because DMAA is a vasoconstrictor. This means it causes blood vessels to narrow, obstructing blood flow. This is exacerbated if a person also consumes caffeine or alcohol awhile taking the substance. In New Zealand, a 21-year-old man suffered a cerebral hemorrhage after consuming 556 mg of caffeine, alcohol, and methylhexanamine. If you or a loved one has experienced adverse effects from workout supplements like these, it’s essential to consult with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in such cases to understand your legal options. While it is a known vasoconstrictor, there is little information concerning its chemical properties, and few studies have been sponsored regarding these workout supplement dangers.

Anyone who has taken dietary aids with DMAA and suffered from medical complications should consider contacting a drug injury lawyer. With the recent FDA decision, it is likely that many victims will be filing suit against some dietary aid manufacturers. Drug injury lawyers are adept at handling cases like these and can help a victim get the restitution they deserve. They will be able to help the client gather information pertinent to the case and put together convincing arguments for the court.
