St. Jude Medical’s Eon® and Eon Mini™ are battery-powered implantable pulse generators (IPGs) used to manage severe pain, making them essential tools in the arsenal of spinal injury lawyers. The devices, often implanted into patients with chronic back pain, send electrical impulses that stimulate the spinal cord. As a result, severe pain is replaced with a mild tingling sensation.

A long-life rechargeable battery is marketed as a key feature of the Eon implants. However, the Eon and Eon Mini were recalled following reports of battery defects, premature battery failure, and excessive battery heat while recharging.

Some patients have reported uncomfortable or intolerable temperature elevations while recharging Eon IPGs. In certain cases, a revision surgery or removal procedure has been necessary. In July 2012, St. Jude Medical addressed these complaints by sending updated charging recommendations to implant recipients and their physicians.

St. Jude Medical also has admitted to issues involving cracked battery welds, citing both manufacturing defects and supplier problems as causes for hundreds of reported premature battery failures. Physicians were advised to closely monitor patients with implanted Eon devices for sudden power loss. If you or a loved one has been affected by these issues, it’s essential to consult with a defective device lawyer for guidance on potential legal actions.

Battery failures render Eon IPGs unable to provide patients relief from chronic pain, while excessive heat during recharging can cause extreme discomfort and even burn injuries. In these cases, an explant—or removal—surgery may be necessary. These procedures can result in health risks, including complications from anesthesia, pain, scarring, and infection.

If you or someone you love received an Eon or Eon Mini IPG implant and has suffered complications as a result of battery overheating or failure, our defective product lawyers would like to speak with you about your injury. You may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and other injury-related expenses. Contact us today and get the legal help you need.
