Understanding Type 2 Diabetes
Invokana and similar drugs were originally prescribed to help treat and manage type 2 diabetes, a common medical condition that occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin to effectively manage blood sugar levels. In some cases, those with type 2 diabetes may also be insulin-resistant, which can further complicate treatment.
Symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes include:
- excessive hunger and thirst
- persistent fatigue
- sudden, unexplained weight gain or loss.
Some people with type 2 diabetes may also experience blurry vision, frequent urination, and prolonged healing of wounds.
While there are treatment and management options for type 2 diabetes, there is unfortunately no cure. In most cases, patients with type 2 diabetes must spend portions of each day testing their blood sugar levels and following a strict diet to maintain and manage their blood sugar. Prescription drugs, such as Invokana, have also commonly been used to help manage and treat this form of diabetes; unfortunately, many patients who have taken this drug have not been made aware of the increased risks of side effects, including amputation and ketoacidosis.
the accident and injury law office of Terry Bryant is here to help you if you have suffered any of these side effects after taking Invokana for type 2 diabetes. Call us toll-free at 1 (800) 444-5000 to set up your free, no-obligation case evaluation now.
Initial Uses for Invokana
Invokana, also known under its generic name of canagliflozin, was first created as a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors. The purpose of this drug was to lower the body’s blood sugar by allowing the kidneys themselves to remove excess blood sugar directly through the urine. This prescription drug, when used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise, has been prescribed to many suffering with type 2 diabetes. Other common branded versions of this drug include Invokamet XR and Invokamet. However, shortly after the drug first began to be prescribed, an increase in type 2 diabetes patients’ needing foot and toe amputation was noticed, as well an increase in other life-threatening side effects, such as ketoacidosis.
If you or a loved one has suffered amputation or ketoacidosis after taking Invokana for type 2 diabetes, you may have a case. We encourage you to contact our team at the accident and injury law office of Terry Bryant toll-free at 1 (800) 444-5000 so we can begin evaluating your case.
Recent FDA Findings
In May 2017, the FDA made an important safety announcement regarding the use of Invokana for treating and managing type 2 diabetes. Specifically, two large clinical trials found that this prescription medication is linked to an increased risk of leg, foot, and toe amputations, as well as ketoacidosis and heart attack in patients.
In the clinical trials, 2,000 individuals with type 2 diabetes were monitored; half the group was treated with Invokana, whereas the other half was given a placebo pill. The specific findings were that the risk of amputation was about twice as high in patients who took Invokana versus those who took a placebo.
As a result of these findings, the FDA has encouraged all patients taking Invokana (or another version of canagliflozin) for management of type 2 diabetes to speak with their health care professionals in order to determine whether use should be discontinued. Furthermore, the FDA has been urging health care professionals to better warn their patients of these potential risks when prescribing Invokana or any similar medication.
Unfortunately for many, the damage has already been done and it’s too late to reverse. If this applies to you after taking Invokana, the best thing you can do for yourself is to schedule a case evaluation with our team as soon as possible.
Could You Qualify for Compensation?
Because of these recent findings, many patients who suffered side effects like amputation and ketoacidosis after taking Invokana have filed lawsuits against the drug manufacturer.
