October 20, 2018

According to news reports, traffic congestion forced both vehicles to slow down, but the driver of the van did not slow down fast enough.

October 20, 2018 – 1:17 pm: The 34-year-old Jose Enrique Rodriguez, of Brownsville, died in a crash with an 18-wheeler that took place early Saturday afternoon.

The accident took place at mile marker 59 of Interstate 35, about 8 miles north of Cotulla.

At the time of the accident, Rodriguez was driving a white Dodge cargo van. The 2017 Freightliner truck in front of him was forced to slow down because of heavy traffic.

Rodriguez did not react to the slowing of the vehicle in front of him in time to avoid a crash. He struck the rear end of the Freightliner and was killed in the accident. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erick Estrada, “Due to the collision the driver of the white Dodge cargo van was pronounced dead on scene.”

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured in the crash. Traffic along I-35 was slowed for several hours while cleanup and investigation of the accident was underway.

This accident is still under investigation at this time.
