News reports state that this is the 2nd accident involving the T-38C Talon II aircraft in the last month, and the 4th accident in a year’s time.
September 11, 2018 – 10:13 am: Two pilots were hospitalized when a training aircraft crashed on takeoff Tuesday morning.
One of the pilots was a German Air Force officer, who was treated for minor injuries at the Sheppard medical clinic. The other was a U.S. Air Force pilot, who was taken to United Regional Medical Center in Wichita Falls.
USAF Colonel Lendy Renegar later Tweeted about the incident, saying, “We are grateful both aircrew members are safe, and for the outstanding response for our fire, security, and medical personnel.”
The pilots were flying a T-38 training aircraft. This is an aging model that has seen four crashes in the last year, including one accident at Oklahoma’s Vance Air Force Base on August 17. The other accidents took place in May 2018 and November 2017.
According to the U.S. Air Force, the T-38 is old, expensive, and outdated. However, budget difficulties have delayed contracts for a new training aircraft to take the Talon’s place.
