Trooper Injured After Being Dragged behind Car in Montgomery County

According to news reports, the driver will face charges in connection with the event, which took place after a traffic stop.

 

February 13, 2019 – 10:00 pm: An unidentified trooper from the Texas Department of Public Safety was injured in Montgomery County on Wednesday night after being dragged behind a car on a traffic stop. The driver of the car, 35-year-old Russell Patrick Richards, of Houston, faces charges for aggravated assault on a public servant and evading arrest/detention with a vehicle.

The incident took place just late on Wednesday night, when the trooper stopped a black 2003 Infiniti Q35. It happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 45 in Montgomery County, near State Highway 242.

The trooper was approaching the vehicle when the driver reached for something under the seat. The trooper attempted to stop him and was dragged behind the vehicle after the driver sped off.

The trooper was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He experienced scrapes, a knee injury, and a possible back injury.

The driver was found after a four hour search and taken into custody at 2:15 am. The incident is still under investigation, and the driver is now in Montgomery County Jail.
