On Wednesday (August 1, 2018), near Midland, Texas, three separate ruptures occurred in the area where two gas pipelines crossed paths. These ruptures led to a series of serious explosions that resulted in injuries to seven people.
According to the Texas Railroad Commission, the regulatory authority of pipelines within the state, one of the pipelines is owned by El Paso Natural Gas and operated by Kinder Morgan, while the other is operated by Navitas Midstream. The explosions occurred about 20 miles southeast of Midland – on FM 1379 about 3 miles south of SH 158.
Early reports state that firefighters were able the suppress the flames from the explosion on Wednesday. After suppressing the initial fire from the first explosion (which happened at approximately 11:30 am), a second and third explosion occurred (shortly after 12:30 pm). A Greenwood firetruck was burned and a Battalion Chief Vehicle was completely destroyed. The accident is still being investigated to determine the exact timeline of events and the exact cause of the explosions. In doing so, perhaps further incidents of this nature can be better avoided.
The injuries that were reported as a direct result of the ruptures and explosions include at least one firefighter who worked to put out the flames as well as several pipeline employees who were on the scene of the accident. From the reports of the incident in Midland, of those sent to Lubbock for treatment, one person was in critical condition, two others were seriously injured, and at least one other had been treated.
