Pedestrian Killed in Vehicle Crash in Katy Area

August 6, 2018

A fatal pedestrian collision occurred on Barker Cypress near Canyon Cypress at around 2:15 a.m. on Monday,  August 6th.

The male pedestrian was walking along the road when he was struck by a red Dodge pick-up truck. The impact with the truck threw him into the right lane, where he was struck a second time by an oncoming Jeep. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities questioned both drivers, who remained at the scene after the accident, but reports say that neither showed signs of impairment. The crash remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

In 2017, there were 614 pedestrian fatalities in Texas. Though that number represents a 10% decrease from 2016, pedestrian safety is still a major concern in our state. There was a total of 8,454 crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists in 2017, resulting in 2,677 possible injuries.

A 2016 study ranked Houston as the 15th most dangerous metro area in the United States for pedestrians. A 2014 study from Alliance for Biking and Walking found that Houston has about 20 pedestrian fatalities for every 10,000 walking commuters, a rate that doubles the national average for large cities.

The Texas Department of Transportation offers several tips to help keep pedestrians as safe as possible. TxDOT suggests that pedestrians use sidewalks when possible, cross streets at intersections and designated crosswalks, and make eye contact with a driver before crossing the road. If no sidewalk is available, pedestrians are asked to walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
