According to investigators on the scene, speed may have also played a factor in the single-vehicle accident.

June 5, 2019 – 11:00 am: One man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a single-vehicle accident that took place when an SUV hydroplaned on wet roads.

The accident took place in the Humble area, where the man was driving northbound on Mesa Drive. Near the intersection with Old Humble Road, the SUV hydroplaned and spun into a light pole.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while the female passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators report that speed and weather conditions contributed to the accident. Senior Accident Investigator Carl Meaux of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office advised drivers in wet conditions: “You definitely need to slow down. It only takes a tenth of an inch on the roadway… to elevate your tires where it loses contact with the roadway. By the time you realize you’ve lost that contact, you’ve lost control.”

The victims of the accident have not been publicly identified at this time. The accident is still being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
