Multiple-Vehicle Crash in Fort Bend County Claims Two Lives

A five-vehicle crash on State Highway 36 near Long Lane claimed two lives on the evening of August 5, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

The five-car pileup began with a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a Ford Explorer. The drivers of the two colliding vehicles were both killed in the crash.

In addition to the two fatalities, one person was taken to the hospital via ambulance and treated for minor injuries. Life Flight was called to the scene of the crash, though reports are unclear as to whether anyone was transported by the medical helicopter.

The crash caused a closure on State Highway 36 for an extended period.

In 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available, there were 9,602 crashes in Fort Bend County. In those crashes, there were 39 fatalities and 196 injuries that were believed to be serious, according to statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation.

On average, a person dies on Texas roads every two hours and 21 minutes. In 2017, there were 3,721 motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the state. Over 200,000 people suffer injuries in vehicle crashes every year in Texas.
