News reports say that Karisma James of El Paso was a nurse and an Army Veteran.
August 13, 2018: Kharisma James was struck by a car and killed outside El Paso’s Tippin Elementary School just after school let out on Monday afternoon. The 33-year-old was trying to save three children who were in the path of the car. The children were injured in the accident.
In the confusion of letting out after the first day of the new school year, the 58-year-old Roger Hawking was picking up his grandchildren from school. The man hit the gas instead of the brake, hitting James and injuring the three children she was protecting.
Witnesses report that Hawking appeared disoriented after the accident. A representative from the police department said he could not comment on whether or not criminal charges would be forthcoming.
Kharisma James was a nurse with The Hospitals of Providence. Nicholas Tejeda, CEO of The Hospitals of Providence, said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend, Kharisma James. This is a tragic loss for our THOP family. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
