3-year-old Girl Hospitalized After Being Left in Car

Police say the girl’s father may face criminal charges after leaving her in the vehicle for over 7 hours.

August 21, 2018 – 6:30 pm: A father who left his daughter in his car for over seven hours while he was at work may face criminal charges.

The father says he forgot to drop the child off at daycare on Tuesday morning, and he left her in the car when he went into work at Don Rey restaurant on South Gessner Road. He reports that he went into work at 9:00 a.m. and didn’t realize what happened until  4:15 p.m., when his wife called him.

The girl was in the car for a little bit over seven hours in scorching temperatures. She was rushed to the hospital, but as of Tuesday evening she’d been taken home and is expected to have a full recovery.

The Harris County District Attorney’s office reported that the investigation is still ongoing, so no decisions have been made about whether the father will face criminal charges or not.

Diana Martinez, a health education specialist with Texas Children’s Center for Childhood Injury Prevention, warns that children left in vehicles can heat up three to five times faster than an adult. In addition, she says, “If it’s 100 degrees outside, it can be 115 or 120 degrees inside the car.”
