Police say the man was riding on horseback in the Crosby area when the collision occurred.
August 14, 2018 – 11:20 pm: A man on horseback was injured and his horse was killed when he was hit by a Toyota Corolla late on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old was injured along U.S. 90 in the Crosby area.
An officer on the scene reported that the horseback rider was riding inside the highway lane, about three feet inside the line.
The man was immediately helicoptered to the hospital, where he is expected to survive despite serious wounds. The horse, however, died on the scene of the accident. The Corolla’s driver was uninjured and was not intoxicated at the time of the accident. The vehicle, however, sustained serious damage to the front, left side, and windshield.
The man who was injured was not checked for intoxication.
The Harris County Sherriff’s Office reports that the area of the highway where the accident occurred has no lighting. The man injured in the accident was not wearing any reflective clothing, despite the darkness. Under these conditions, the Corolla’s driver was reported as being unable to see the man or the horse in time to avoid an accident.
