News reports state that the cause of Thursday’s explosion is still unknown.

September 13, 2018 – 3:20 pm: A home in Haskell County exploded Thursday afternoon. Wayne and Vicki Fillingim of Brownfield were both injured and taken to the University Medical Center’s Burn Unit in Lubbock.

Wayne Fillingim succumbed to his wounds and died on Saturday afternoon. Vicki is still recovering and has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit.

The home was on Lakeshore Sites Road, near Lake Stamford in Haskell County. Sue Hamilton, a neighbor who called 911 after the accident, said she thinks the house was the couple’s retirement home.

Wayne Fillingim was airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, while Vicki was transported by ambulance.

No one else was present in the house at the time of the accident. Sarah Rothwell, the couple’s niece, said, “They are probably the most loving and God-loving people you’ve ever met.” Rothwell also told reporters this was the second tragedy the family has recently faced after Vicki’s brother-in-law had a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown at this time. According to the Haskell Fire Department, an investigator from the State Fire Marshall’s Office is scheduled to look into the cause.
