Two Injured When Driver Hits Firetruck

August 15, 2018

News outlets report that the driver was trapped in his vehicle and firefighters had to remove him from the car.

August 15, 2018 – 3:00 am: A driver crashed into a Houston Fire Department truck at the fire station near Little York and Maple Leaf in northeast Houston.

HFD District Chief Eric Hutzley reports that the firetruck was backing into the station with its flashers on when the driver of a black Chevrolet Impala attempted to go around the truck at high speed. Hutzley said, “We were doing a routine, coming back from a call, backing in with the lights flashing, and the traffic signal was on red, and a vehicle just pulled out. We suspect the driver had been drinking alcohol and may have been impaired in some way.”

Another firefighter reported that the driver told him he had been drinking before the accident.

The front end of the Impala was smashed in the crash, and the driver received injuries to his legs. The HPD firefighters then had to cut the man out of the vehicle.

The driver of the Impala was taken to the hospital, along with a firefighter who complained of shoulder pain. Both of them are expected to make a good recovery.
