The northbound driver on the Texas 6 feeder road passed through an intersection and struck a traffic light pole.
A 52-year-old man driving a red Ford Expedition was killed in a crash early Sunday in the Energy Corridor.
HPD responded to the 1100 block of Highway 6 near Park Row Drive at 1:30 a.m. They said that the driver was traveling northbound on the feeder road when he failed to pay heed to the turn lane markings, continued straight, hit the curb, and struck a traffic light pole head on.
The man was rushed to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and pronounced dead. It is unknown whether speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash. The driver was the sole occupant of the SUV.
The service road was shut down while police investigated the incident.
In 2017, there were 925 fatal crashes involving SUVs in Texas. There were also 761 people killed in
crashes occurring in intersections or related to an intersection. Over one-third of all fatal wrecks were single-vehicle, run-off-the-road crashes.
On average, a person is killed on Texas roads every two hours and 21 minutes. A reportable crash occurs every 59 seconds.
