Woman Hospitalized, HCSO Car Damaged In A Double Accident On Hempstead Road

July 24, 2018

A 3-vehicle accident has landed a woman in the hospital with serious injuries and a HCSO cruiser damaged.

July 24, 2018: Authorities said the accident happened on Hempstead Road near Yumi Ice Cream headquarters, on the northwest side of town just inside the Loop near 290. It was reported that the crash left a woman seriously injured and also damaged a deputy’s car.

A driver of a pickup truck lost control while traveling westbound on Hempstead Road – which is what started this 3 car accident. The pickup swerved off of the road and struck a fence possibly because he was distracted while behind the wheel. Reports suggest the driver of the pickup was not injured.

It was reported that the second crash happened after a HCSO cruiser arrived at the scene. An eastbound vehicle was being driven by a woman who did not realize the truck was blocking part of the lane. She reportedly struck the pickup truck, spun around, and collided with the cruiser. At the time of the crash, the deputy driving the cruiser was not inside the vehicle.

It was reported by witnesses at the scene that the woman suffered injuries as a result of the collision. She was taken by first responders from the accident scene to receive medical care.

The accident remains under investigation. No other information has been released to the public at the time of this report.

Comments:

Distracted driving is a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents. Distraction comes in a variety of forms, e.g. texting while driving, interacting with passengers, adjusting the radio. We encourage all drivers to pay attention to the road at all times, and appreciate the potential consequences of their behavior on others and to themselves.
