October 12, 2018 – 3:00 pm: A 2-year-old girl, whose identity has not yet been released, was mauled and killed by her family dog on Friday afternoon.

The attack took place in front of a family home in Alvin, Texas, about 30 miles south of Houston. According to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, the girl was reportedly playing in the front yard with the dog when it attacked her.

The girl was severely injured and died at the scene. Authorities responding to the attack euthanized the mixed-breed dog soon afterward. The dog’s body was taken to a lab and will be examined to see if the cause of its behavior can be found.

The attack has been called “a horrific and tragic accident,” and no charges are expected to be filed as a result.

This is the second dog bite fatality in Texas during 2018, following the death of the 4-year-old Noah Trevino earlier this year. Texas had three dog bite fatalities in 2017, and 3 in 2016. This latest attack is still under investigation.
