Cyclist Killed, Another Injured in Fatal Collision Outside of Harlingen

August 19, 2018

The two cyclists were traveling east on FM 106.

One cyclist was killed and another injured just outside the Harlingen city limits around 7:30 a.m. on August 19, when the two were struck by a pickup truck.

Texas Department of Public Safety said that 47-year-old Rosie Romo and another cyclist were struck by the right front corner of a Ford F-250 on FM 106 east of FM 509. The cyclists were taken to the hospital, where Romo passed away.

Troopers investigating the crash did not say whether the driver would be charged.

In 2017, there were 2,687 crashes involving cyclists in Texas, resulting in 57 deaths – a 13.6% decrease from 2016 – and 334 suspected serious injuries, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

For more than a year, Houston Police have been enforcing safe passing distances between drivers and cyclists through the use of radars equipped on undercover bicycles. Houston’s Safe Passing/Vulnerable Road User Ordinance requires motor vehicle drivers to keep a distance of three feet when passing a “vulnerable road user,” a classification which includes cyclists, pedestrians, stranded motorists or passengers, highway construction or maintenance workers, and tow truck operators, among others.
