October 9, 2018 – 7:15 pm: Three people were injured in a crash that took place on Tuesday evening, including two soldiers from Fort Polk.
The accident happened near Burkeville in Newton County, on State Highway 63.
The crash involved a 2008 Chevrolet passenger vehicle headed westbound and being driven by Courtney Jones, 20, of Fort Polk, and a 2019 Toyota Corolla headed eastbound and being driven by Elosiua Insua, of Minnesota.
Jones was trying to pass a vehicle in front of her when she swerved into the path of Insua’s vehicle. The Chevrolet caught fire on impact.
Jones and Insua were both injured in the crash, as was Jones’s passenger, 22-year-old Keshaunt Quattlebaum. Jones and Quattlebaum were both taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Insua was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for serious injuries.
There has been speculation that weather was a factor in the accident, because of slick roads on account of rain, but this has not been confirmed by police.
This crash is still under investigation, and a press release from the police made it clear that this account is preliminary.
