The 29-year-old Fabrizio Stabile of Ventnor, New Jersey died of a rare infection of Naegleria fowleri. This is a freshwater amoeba, which has a 97% fatality rate and has only been diagnosed 34 times in the last 10 years in the United States. The infection causes severe brain swelling and is nearly always fatal.
Stabile first showed signs of his illness on September 16th, when he had a severe headache while mowing his lawn. He was taken to Atlantic City Medical Center a few days later, and died the next day, on September 21.
Stabile reportedly picked up the infection while swimming in the wave pool at Waco’s BSR Cable Park. The resort has been closed since Sunday, September 30. The resort is currently under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to determine whether their safety practices were in compliance with CDC guidelines.
Fabrizio Stabile’s family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help build awareness and treatment for Naegleria Fowleri infections.
