2-Month-Old Given Fatal Dose of Sleep Medication in Keene

August 13, 2018

August 13, 2018: Adonna Townsend of Keene, Texas was arrested for the death of her roommate’s 2-month-old child.

The incident took place this May, on the 500 block of South College Drive in Keene. Adonna Townsend was babysitting her roommate’s baby while the child’s mother was out of town.

At the time, authorities responded to a call about the baby being unable to breathe. By the time they arrived on the scene, the child had already passed away. CPR was attempted, but there was no result.

Townsend was interviewed in May, but the police released her afterward. This week’s arrest comes as a result of a medical examiner’s report, which indicated that the child died as a result of an overdose of sleep medication.

There are no sleep medications approved for babies, regardless of the dose. Medical professionals advise that a baby who will not go to sleep should not be given any sleep aids. A noisy child is something that has to be managed in other ways.

A baby can easily overdose on sleep medications. Adonna Townsend was arrested by Grand Prarie police this Monday and is now charged with criminally negligent homicide.
