October 25, 2018 – 11:00 am: An employee of the Texas A&M University System was significantly burned after an explosion at the RELLIS campus in Brazos County on Thursday morning.

The explosion took place in the Process Engineering Research and Development Center, where one of the staffers had been extracting oil from a seed. The equipment he was using applies steam and pressure for extraction, and it exploded during the process.

Texas A&M University Police Department spokesman Lt. Bobby Richardson told reporters, “It wasn’t like a bomb. It was an explosion of steam.”

The explosion didn’t do any serious damage to the building, but the employee was burned along his face and body. By Thursday afternoon, he had been taken to CHI St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. His condition was stable, and he was able to speak.

The University Police Department officer patrolling RELLIS campus responded quickly, determining that the event was an accident. The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time. Henry Judah, risk management director for Texas A&M, reports that the injured employee is likely to receive full financial backing from the university.
