August 28, 2018

The fatal rush-hour crash on I-10 near Pleasantville occurred after the driver of a Mazda sedan experienced vehicle problems.

A 19-year-old man was killed in a collision between a Jeep Wrangler and a Mazda 3 on the East Freeway at around 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2018.

A woman driving the Jeep Wrangler crashed into the rear end of the stalled-out sedan on the eastbound lanes of I-10 near the East Loop, between McCarty and Mercury. The back half of the Mazda 3 was crushed upon impact, and the driver was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Jeep was also taken to St. Joseph Medical Center where she was treated for non-fatal injuries.

The authorities have not said whether she would be charged in the incident, though they said she showed no signs of impairment.

Main lanes of I-10 were closed for several hours following the fatal collision.

In 2017, there were 1,346 crashes involving a disabled vehicle in a traffic lane. In those crashes, 49 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes and 94 were involved in crashes that resulted in a suspected serious injury.
