February 12, 2019

According to news reports, the fiery wreck took place about six miles west of Woodville.

February 12, 2019 – 6:30 pm: An accident involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck ended in the death of the 53-year-old Matthew Calley of Magnolia, Texas on Tuesday evening. The driver of the pickup and his two passengers were treated for minor injuries and released shortly after the accident.

The crash took place on U.S. 190, where Calley was headed westbound on a 2018 Harley Davidson. Derrick Simmons, 41, was driving a 2003 Dodge pickup truck eastbound.

According to Simmons, he thought he saw headlights in his lane, so he pulled over onto the shoulder. Then he tried to avoid a collision by swerving to the left, but this evasive action led to him striking the motorcycle.

Both the motorcycle and the pickup caught fire after the collision. Calley was pronounced dead when Tyler County Justice of the Peace Trisher Ford arrived on the scene of the accident.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, “This remains an ongoing investigation as troopers work to determine the exact factors that contributed to this fatal crash.”
