August 23, 2018

News reports state that a pedestrian was killed while crossing U.S. Highway 59 near the Polk-San Jacinto County Line.

August 23, 2018 – 6:30 am: Ashley Nicole Oquin, 32, of Livingston was killed while walking on U.S. 59 about a mile north of the Trinity River Bridge on Thursday morning.

The vehicle that hit her was a marked DPS patrol vehicle. According to the DPS press release, “The preliminary crash investigation indicates a female pedestrian wearing dark colored clothing who was reportedly walking in the inside lane of the highway, was struck by the vehicle. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Polk County Justice of the Peace.”

The accident is likely to be due to adverse lighting conditions in the early morning, as well as the dark clothing the victim was wearing. Pedestrians are advised not to walk inside the lanes of U.S. highways.

Both southbound lanes of U.S. 59 were closed for a while on Thursday morning, and traffic was redirected onto the shoulder of the highway. Rhonda Oaks from the Texas Department of Transportation reports that the southbound lanes have since been reopened.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
