The HPD officer was riding a police motorcycle when he was struck by an SUV driver who failed to yield right of way.
A Houston police officer riding a motorcycle was struck by a Honda SUV along the southbound lane of Highway 45 at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The motorcycle had its emergency lights and siren running when the SUV driver failed to yield right of way. The collision sent the police officer’s motorcycle skidding down the Gulf Freeway.
Authorities said that the officer sustained minor rash injuries and was transported to Memorial Hermann for observation.
A driver’s failure to yield was listed by the Texas Department of Transportation as a contributing factor in more than 90,000 Texas crashes in 2017. A failure to yield to an emergency vehicle contributed to 478 crashes, resulting in four deaths and more than 100 possible injuries.
In 2017, there were 925 fatal crashes involving SUVs in Texas. There were 501 motorcyclists killed on Texas roads in 2017.
Motorcyclists are 27 times more likely than occupants of other vehicles to be killed in a crash, and more than half were not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
