HPD Officer Injured in Accident with Big Rig

Preliminary information indicates that the officer hit some debris in the road before being struck by the 18-wheeler.

 

February 7, 2019 – 7:00 am: A motorcycle officer of the Houston Police Department was injured on Thursday morning in an accident involving a big-rig.

The accident took place on southbound North Freeway, near N. Main Street.

According to reports from HPD, the motorcycle officer hit a patch of debris on the freeway, leading to a loss of control and causing the accident with the big rig. The officer is reported to be conscious and breathing, and was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by ambulance with a police escort.

The extent of the officer’s injuries is not clear at this time. Neither the identity of the officer nor that of the driver of the big rig have been made available to the public at this time. It is unclear whether the driver of the big rig was in any way at-fault for the accident.

As of 7:39 on Thursday morning, drivers in the area were advised to seek alternate routes. Cleanup is still underway, and the accident is still under investigation at the present time.
