Construction Worker Injured in Electrical Explosion

Firefighters first responded to reports of an electrical fire in the Lancaster Hotel on Monday morning.

August 20, 2018 – 11:35 am: One construction worker was hospitalized with burns sustained in an electrical fire at the Lancaster Hotel this Monday morning.

The fire department received a call about a high-rise fire at the hotel on 701 Texas Avenue, around 11:35 on Monday morning.

The fire took place in one of the electrical vaults of the Lancaster Hotel. These vaults are underground compartments that store utility equipment beneath the sidewalks. Firefighters found that one of the electrical vaults had exploded. Houston Fire Department spokesperson Sheldra Brigham reports that the cover had been blown off, seriously burning a construction worker on a nearby scaffolding.

The construction worker received burns on his arms and back, and was taken to the hospital soon afterward.

According to the Lancaster Hotel, the building where the incident took place is closed for renovations. No one was inside when the explosion happened.

After the threat of fire was removed, the fire department turned the situation over to an electrical company. No word on the cause of the explosion has been given at this time.
