Roundup and Lymphoma
Roundup is a widely-used herbicide that has come under intense scrutiny for its links to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The maker of Roundup, Monsanto, has been aware of the link between Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and their product but has continued to make it available to consumers.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and are concerned that Roundup might be the cause, contact Terry Bryant Accident & Injury Law. We are meeting with concerned consumers to make sure that the manufacturer is held responsible for the damage Roundup has caused.
We believe that if your condition was caused by the negligence of a company, that company should pay the costs associated with your illness. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma presents many challenges for sufferers, including pain, intense and ongoing medical treatment, lost wages, and several other life-altering consequences. Terry Bryant Accident & Injury Law wants to make sure that Monsanto compensates victims of Roundup exposure.
WHAT IS ROUNDUP?
Roundup is one of the most popular weed killers in the world. It is used by homeowners, landscapers, farmers, and several commercial enterprises. There are several types of Roundup, and buyers can purchase varieties developed for different plants, climates, and uses.
There are three main ingredients used in Roundup:
- Gly – Glyphosate (“Gly”) is the herbicide component in Roundup. It is linked to several types of cancer, most notably Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
- Surfactant – The surfactant is the substance that causes the solution to stay on a plant, allowing the gly to bore in and kill the weed. Roundup has used POEA as a surfactant, though it has also been identified as a carcinogen.
There is a growing body of research suggesting that several health complications stem from exposure to Roundup. Allegedly, Monsanto not only knew about some of these risks, but also sought to influence federal regulators to obscure public knowledge and government regulation of their product, according to court documents reported on by the New York Times.
Monsanto has continued to deny the negative health effects of Roundup exposure. They deny allegations that they attempted to ghostwrite a positive scientific report on glyphosate and, despite much evidence to the contrary, that their product poses a threat to consumers.
However, the United Nation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has indeed concluded that exposure to glyphosate likely increases the chances of developing cancer. According to National Geographic, “the studies found glyphosate in farmworkers’ blood and urine, chromosomal damage in cells, increased risks of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in some people exposed, and tumor formation in some animal studies.”
SIGNS OF NON-HODGKIN’S LYMPHOMA
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that can manifest itself almost anywhere in the body. It could spread to the lymph nodes, bone marrow, digestive tract, spleen, and other places where lymph tissue is present. Lymphomas come in many forms, ranging from slow-acting to aggressive varieties.
According to the American Cancer Society, signs and symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma include:
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Sweating and chills
- Weight loss
- Swollen abdomen
- Feeling full after only a small amount of food
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath or cough.
If you believe you have this form of lymphoma, your first step should be seeking medical treatment as soon as possible. If left untreated, lymphoma can spread to other parts of the body.
YOUR LEGAL OPTIONS
Though many of us have been exposed to harmful herbicides either through home use or on the foods we purchase, some people have had higher levels of exposure than others. If you have been diagnosed with lymphoma and have repeatedly been exposed to Roundup, you might be able to take legal action to earn compensation for your damages.
At Terry Bryant Accident & Injury Law, we take these cases very seriously. We believe that a victim should not have to pay the costs associated with their condition when it is caused by a negligent manufacturer. Our firm assists people in filing product liability claims, which can be a vital way for victims to cope with the incredible financial consequences of a dangerous product.
