School Bus Accident Near Austin, TX, Injures 10 Students

October 24, 2018

Ten students were injured just before 8 a.m. Wednesday morning on Highway 71 at Tucker Hill Lane outside of Austin, TX.

Bastrop Independent School District said that the crash occurred as Bus 220 was transporting 19 students from Cedar Creek High School, Cedar Creek Middle School, and Cedar Creek Intermediate School.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the bus driver said he was turning right onto Highway 71 at a green light.

The driver of a westbound tractor-trailer that struck the bus reported that he had a yellow light at the same intersection. The truck driver said he was unable to avoid a collision despite taking evasive action. The trucker struck the shoulder of the road and eventually collided with the rear end of the school bus.

10 of the children injured on the bus were taken to the hospital, eight of whom were taken via ambulance, while the remaining two were taken by their parents. It is unclear how badly the children are injured.

Buses and tractor-trailers are both classified as commercial motor vehicles. In 2017, there were a total of 35,635 commercial vehicle crashes in Texas, resulting in 601 deaths and 1,529 suspected serious injuries.
