Toyota Overtakes Volkswagen in the Midst of the Emissions Scandal

by Terry Bryant

Earlier this fall, VW issued a recall for the 2009 to 2015 VW Diesel Jetta, Beetle, Golf, and Audi A3 and the 2014 to 2015 VW Diesel Passat. Owners of these vehicles may have a claim against VW. The industry leader deliberately misled consumers and federal regulators by installing “defeat devices” that turn off emissions controls when the cars are in normal driving conditions. That is when the cars are not being tested for emissions and fuel efficiency.

Now, the scandal is catching up with VW.  VW has officially fallen from its glory as the world’s top automaker by sales. Toyota has now taken the lead. Between January and June of this year, VW sold 5.04 million vehicles. Toyota sold 5.02 million. VW managed to surpass Toyota in second-quarter sales. However, VW’s sales have tanked since the emissions scandal broke, allowing Toyota to pull ahead in the race for the number one spot.  VW sold 7.43 million vehicles from January to September of this year, compared to Toyota’s 7.49 million.
