Danger in Laundry Detergent Packets

by Terry Bryant

The newly innovated sweet smelling and colorful detergent packets may be powerful on laundry and dishes but enticingly deadly in the hands of toddlers, who bite, swallow, or rub the substance in their eyes after they break the membrane.  According to The American Association of Poison Control, the liquid laundry packets, which are more powerful than powder or liquid detergent, contain highly concentrated chemicals that have already taken the life of a 7-month old boy from Florida.  In Harris County, alone 75 children were poisoned with the packets, according to the Southeast Texas Poison Center.
