SUV Driver Injured After Collision with Train in East Houston

August 1, 2018

Authorities report that a man drove his car into a moving train in East Houston, causing the vehicle to flip over on impact.

August 1, 2018 – 11:30 pm:  A man was injured Wednesday night after his large SUV collided with a moving train at a railroad crossing at East Little York and Mesa. A witness to the accident said that the man was driving eastbound on Little York and slammed into the train at about 11:30 at night. The vehicle was thrown about 20 yards into a nearby ditch as a result of the force of the collision.

According to police, the SUV driver drove up to the railroad crossing and tried to beat the approaching train. From a photo of the scene, a broken crossing gate suggests the driver drove through this before hitting the train on its side.

The witness said that the man emerged bloodied from his vehicle before fleeing on foot. The conductor of the train did not stop. Local news sources say that the conductor may never have known that the crash occurred.

It is still unknown why the man failed to stop at the railroad crossing or why he fled on foot after the crash. The East Houston incident happened in zip code 77016, down the street from North Forest High School.

In the US, a person or a vehicle is hit by a train every two hours. 274 people died in collisions with trains in 2017 and 807 were injured, according to figures from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis. Crashes with trains are deadlier than crashes with other motor vehicles; according to NHSTA statistics, you are 20 times more likely to die in a crash with a train.
