What Is Supplemental Security Income?
People who are aged, blind, and/or disabled and have little to no income may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. If you are approved for SSI benefits, you will receive a monthly cash benefit, which can be used for basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter.
Though these benefits are offered by the Social Security Administration, eligibility for SSI benefits is not based on work history, like Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. The federal government funds SSI benefits with general tax revenues, unlike SSD benefits, which are funded by Social Security taxes.
