Botulism Outbreak May Affect Tens of Millions of Canned Food Products
Castleberry’s Food Company, a major canned food producer, has issued a national recall of 90 different products due to a botulism outbreak. The recall affects a range of products, from chili and dog food to BBQ pork and soup. Castleberry’s food products are sold across the country under many different brand names, but all may be affected (1).
Bacteria that cause botulism were found in some of the products produced in Castleberry’s Augusta, Georgia plant, which prompted the government recall of the canned food products
.Botulism is a muscle-paralyzing disease caused by a toxin produced by certain bacteria, which are usually found in soil. Symptoms of botulism begin 18 to 36 hours after exposure and include blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness that moves down the body. Paralysis of the limbs and breathing muscles can also occur if left untreated. About 8% of cases are fatal (2).
